🇦🇲 A brawl broke out in Armenia’s parliament between lawmakers from the ruling Civil Contract party and the opposition Strong Armenia faction, forcing a suspension of the session. The incident was broadcast live.
The clash began Thursday during a speech by Civil Contract lawmaker Taron Chakhoyan, when Strong Armenia faction leader Narek Karapetyan interrupted him and the two exchanged insults before lawmakers came to blows. Fighting continued in the corridors, where security staff separated the sides. Speaker Ruben Rubinyan said Karapetyan tried to hit Chakhoyan and that another opposition lawmaker, Garnik Davtyan, then struck him. Local media reported that Deputy Speaker Vahagn Aleksanyan of Civil Contract threw a chair toward the opposition and that an ambulance arrived. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan condemned violence but blamed the opposition and backed his party’s actions. The session resumed after a break. Azernews reports a similar clash occurred in early October.
Responsibility for the start of the fight is disputed, and I found no response from Strong Armenia or an official injury report. Civil Contract won 64 seats in the June election and Strong Armenia, linked to jailed-then-house-arrested businessman Samvel Karapetyan, won 29; the opposition rejected the result but took its seats.
